6 days Adventure by Mountain Bike in the Maira Valley, mountain bike paradise

The mountain at full throttle in a corner of Occitania between Piedmont and France

€ 1099

The Val Maira Valley is a true mountain biker’s paradise: views are breathtaking and the trails are plentiful and well marked. We will climb for example up to 2937 meters to mount Bellino. But if you look around, the rocks, the clean air and the peacefulness will make you feel on top of the world in this corner of Occitan land, between Italy and France.

Our Marco’s father is from Val Maira, and used to be a shepard during the summers as a young boy on this wild mountains. Then with his Vespa he arrived to the plains, but that’s another story. To us this left the desire to pedal and ride in this incredible place, perfect for bikers with good legs and plenty of breath.

For the mountain bike adventures we will be joined by Marco and also by a specialized mountain bike guide from the area. The maximum number of participants is 7 people.

This will be a real adventure, don’t miss it!

Val Maira

difficulty level:Challenging

A physically / technically challenging tour, suitable for riders that routinely use mountain bikes (or e-mountain bikes) on trips with long uphills or very rough off-road stretches (mountain trails).

Day 1 - Let's start!
Meeting in Turin Porta Nuova at 3:00 pm, transfer to Marmora, Locanda Ceaglio. Delivery of the bikes, mounting pedals, explanation of the week's itinerary. Dinner at Locanda Ceaglio, relax under the stars and then sleep, in anticipation of the next day's excursion!

Day 2 - La Gardetta
We start climbing on asphalt roads from 1.200m at the start up to 2.400m of the hills Esischie and Fauniera, from here we will take the beautiful military road that will take us to the refuge of the Gardetta. After a lunch break we will descend along a beautiful and single-track technical route down to the valley. (Depending on the group's preferences, we could shorten the initial climb).

Day 3 - The Strada dei Cannoni (Cannon road)
Short transfer by minibus to the valley floor, and then we begin cycling towards Colle Birrone, from there we will be on the Strada dei Cannoni, built around the mid-eighteenth century at the time of the war of succession of Austria, known today for the spectacular panorama. Packed lunch provided by Locanda Ceaglio. (Depending on the group's preferences, we could shorten the initial climb).

Day 4 - The Napoleonic Road

On the central day we will face a somewhat shorter but equally spectacular and entertaining tour, which will allow us to rest our legs and lower back a bit.

We will go up to the Superiore village, take the Napoleonic road and descend to the valley along a beautiful and fun single track in the woods. Then we will return to Locanda Ceaglio, lunch and free afternoon (rest / relax / walk)

Day 5 - The Tour of Monte Bellino

We transfer by minibus to Acceglio, then unload the bikes and start pedaling! In the first 16km of this nice ride we will go from almost 1,400m to just under 3,000m (2,937, to be precise). The road, which will be paved initially, will gradually become more challenging: first dirt road, then military road, finally trail. The last few meters we will have to push (or carry) the bike to the top, but it will be worth it! At the top, photos, sandwich, and we will start the descent, on the west side, passing by Chiappera. Once in Acceglio we will return to Marmora by minibus.
Packed lunch will be provided by Locanda Ceaglio.

Day 6 - the Maestro d'Elva and the Fremo Cuncunà
Transfer by minibus to Ponte Marmora, where we will start pedaling along the old road (closed to vehicular traffic) until we reach Elva, where inside the parish church we will admire the cycle of frescoes by the "Maestro d'Elva" Hans Clemer, one of the masterpieces of sacred art in Piedmont (at over 1,600meters!). Back in the saddle, we will arrive at the most spectacular point of the day: the Fremo Cuncunà, an incredible cantilever rock that dominates the entire valley!
After some picture taking we will return to the minibus and then to the Ceaglio inn for the final lunch and we will leave to go back home.

This is one of our harder tours. You don't need to have the legs and breath of Nino Schurter, nor knowing how to go downhill like Greg Minnaar, it is however important that you can self-evaluate your physical condition and your technical skills to make sure you can complete the tour satisfied.

  • This a tour made for mountain bikers with a good level of condition both from technical and physical standpoints.
  • You have to be able to deal with distances of 50-60 km per day with positive altitude changes of up to 1,500-2,000 m. You should also be able to lead a mountain bike even on S3 and S4 (big rocks and steps, ramps with steep slopes, narrow switchbacks)
  • At some point, for short stretches, you may need to push and carry the bike on your shoulder.

For more information about the difficulty rates, you can read this article by Marco: Our guide to bike trails difficulty levels

If you prefer, you can ask Marco to help with your self-evaluation, via telephone, Skype or Whatsapp.  Send an email to [email protected] and set up a phone appointment with him.

You can bring your own bike

You can ride our tours with your own MTB. This is the bike you know perfectly, your faithful adventure buddy.

We recommend a full-suspended AllMountain MTB (>120mm suspension) or an Enduro MTB. (For any questions you can contact us directly).

Don't forget that this is a bikepacking tour, so you will need appropriate gear, and a helmet, of course.

Consider that there will likely be extra charges for bulky luggage if you decide to transport your MTB by plane, and a special bag is normally needed. If you want more information on how to get here with your own bike, check this article on our blog: How to reach Torino with your own bike.

La tua MTB
You can ride one of our brand new mountain bikes

We chose for our tours an all mountain MTB,  efficient and versatile. It can easily and efficiently go up and downhill, and you will be free to have fun, to ride and approach new trails.

  • Alluminium frame with Maestro Suspension system
  • 27.5'' wheels
  • 150mm front fork
  • 140mm rear shock absorber
  • 2x9 speed shifting
  • 2x180mm hydraulic disc brakes

Our mountain bikes are normally equipped with flat pedals. If you prefer, however, we can swap them for your own SPD pedals (remember to bring them with you).

For this whole tour, the rental fee is 199 Euros

This tour, like all our "special" tour in the mountains includes, besides the presence and assistance of Marco, also the guidance of an expert local guide, which knows all the paths, detours and shortcuts.

Marco is the head of our biking tours. Master motorbike traveller, he's been everywhere in Europe in the last 16 years, he loves heavy metal music, eating jam directly from the jar with a spoon, living in the country and solving a Rubik's cube in less than 50 seconds. He's got super brains, he has a solution for everything but his stinky socks!

Never without: a Rubik's cube

Favourite quote: "It could be worse... It could be raining!"

Cozy and authentic, it is an ideal starting point for those who decide to do sport tours in this part of Occitania.

In summer it can be quite challenging to find a room here because of its popularity. So, we will stay in double or triple rooms and it will not be possible to book a single room.

Giroola’s Mountain bike adventures are ideal for solo travelers.

We will meet on the trails, in a group of sporty people just like yourself, we will share lunch outdoors, dinner together in some inn in the evening and you will find yourself in a group of new friends.

For our Mountain bike adventures, because we will have accomodation in the mountain areas, everyone will sleep in double or triple rooms and it will not be possible to book a single room.

This tour starts at 3 pm in Torino.

If you come by car and have your own bike, we will meet in a suitable place to leave your car. Marco will pick you up with our Minibus and the bike holder and we will leave together. If you are coming by train and you will use one of our bikes, we can eet at the Torino Porta Nuova Station.

If you want to meet us directly at the Pensione Ceaglio in Marmora Vernetti (Val Maira, CN), meeting time is  5 PM. (here are directions on how to get there)

The tour ends at about 3pm of the sixth day.

The client who decides to withdraw from the contract before departure for circumstances beyond those listed above shall pay, after deducting the account paid as per article 4, the penalty indicated in article 6.

Variations to the tour, requested by the client, after the confirmation of booking, could involve processing expenses for Giroola Srl and at times penalties charged by suppliers.
