Tour of Monviso, 4 days of hiking between Italy and France, to discover the Stone King

Magnificent forests, high mountains and the scenic Buco del Viso, the first tunnel in the Alps

The Giro del Monviso is one of the most exciting and scenic treks in the Western Alps, as well as the oldest multi-day itinerary around a peak.

The route runs between Italy and France, in a unique setting that ranges from magnificent woods to high mountain environments in a natural environment protected by two natural parks and with the characteristic crossing of the Buco di Viso, the first tunnel of the Alps open at the end of the 1400s and recently reopened.

The tour consists of 4 days of intermediate level (E) and challenging (EE) hiking, with overnight stay in a different refuge every night to complete the whole route around the Monviso. We will walk in a group of maximum 8 people, and we will accomplish together this beautiful journey in the purest mountains.

Our minibus will assist us to take us from Turin (or from Savigliano - CN) to Pontechianale, and bring us back at the end of the holiday.

The price also includes the night accommodation, and all packed lunches and dinners.

Please note: the route can be modified according to weather and safety conditions. So there might be last minute variations.

A great sports and mountain lover, during the summer you will find him along the trails hiking and mountain biking, and in the winter again there with skis or a snowboard on his feet. Always looking for new routes, he loves good food and good company. When he is not in the mountains you'll find him at the sea side surfing or rehearsing a play with his actor friends.

Never without: a good cup of coffee

Our minibus

This tour consists of 4 days of level routes between Intermediate (itineraries on paths of various kinds, sometimes with marked slopes, lasting 5-6 hours of walking and with a positive vertical drop of maximum 900-1000 meters) and Challenging (itineraries that present some technical difficulties, such as rocks, slight snowy slopes, exposed stretches and in some cases single rocky passages of easy climbing (I and II degree) that require the use of hands, a good rhythm is required and an adequate physical preparation is required for a day of continuous walking in the mountains;

So, it does not pose particular difficulties, but to enjoy the holiday and be at ease it is good to self-evaluate objectively your own conditions and abilities.

Classification of difficulty levels for trekking and hiking itineraries:

  • Easy (Tourist): relatively short itineraries, on wide paths and flat dirt roads or with slight slopes; lasting 3-4 hours of walking and with a positive vertical gain of maximum 450-550 meters.
  • Intermediate (excursion): itineraries on paths of various kinds, sometimes with marked slopes; lasting 5-6 hours of walking and with a positive difference in height of maximum 900-1000 meters.
  • Challenging (Expert Hiking): itineraries that present some technical difficulties, such as rocky ground, slight snowy slopes, exposed sections and in some cases single rocky sections of easy climbing (I and II degree) that require the use of hands; a good rhythm is required and physical preparation must be adequate for a day of continuous walking in the mountains; lasting 8-9 hours of walking and with a positive difference in altitude from 1000 meters upwards.
  • CLOTHING We recommend to dress in layers, using breathable garments, but without forgetting a fleece and a windproof and rainproof jacket. Regarding the trousers it is better to opt for a pair that would be not too heavy, able to dry quickly and especially with elastic parts to facilitate movement and be comfortable. About socks and underwear is advisable to opt for garments in polypropylene, that are breathable and able to dry quickly.
  • FOOTWEAR: Boots or low shoes are both fine, provided they are fit for hiking. We recommend to bring shoes that have been broken-in already, to ensure good comfort when worn all day.
  • BACKPACK: We recommend a 40 to 60 liters capacity backpack, that you should test and fill before departure, trying to keep the weight down (we recommend a maximum weight of 11-12 kg max). You should therefore bring only the essentials, using lightweight and functional clothing and equipment, without forgetting a good rain cover in case of rain.
  • HIKING STICKS: ideal both uphill and downhill to reduce the effort of leg muscles and to reduce the load on the joints.
  • DO NOT FORGET: A pair of sunglasses, sunscreen, a water bottle of at least half a liter as well as a cap and a band to protect the forehead and ears from the wind are essential.
